Believe it or not, next year on February 11 2014, it will be the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first concert in USA, which took place at the Washington Coliseum.
When the Beatles flew in from England they were greeted by over 3,000 screaming and hysterical fans at JFK airport, New York.
Before the concert, the Beatles introduced themselves to the American nation by appearing on TV's very popular "The Ed Sullivan Show.
" Their performance on the show proved to be a big hit with the American audience, further fueling 'Beatlemania' in USA and making them even more popular, especially with young female fans! After their performance on Ed Sullivan show, the Beatles traveled to Washington D.
C.
to perform in front of thousands of crazed teenagers at the Washington Coliseum.
The Beatles had initial success in the American charts with their hit release 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' which went straight to No.
1 a few months earlier.
This hit single sold more than five million copies in less than two months.
Following the release of 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' the Beatles released 'She Loves You' in USA, which had already been a hit in UK.
The single also went directly to the No.
1 position in the American charts.
The Washington Coliseum concert could not be compared with the professionalism of concerts staged by other rock bands in the years immediately preceding the Beatles first U.
S concert.
During the Washington concert, the noise from screaming girls in the audience and the poor sound system in use made it virtually impossible to hear their set.
The positioning of the stage located in the center of the auditorium resulted in the Beatles having to move their equipment regularly during their set, so they could look directly at all sections of the audience during the performance.
Imagine the effect this continual movement about the stage had on poor Ringo Starr, the Beatles drummer, who had to move his drum kit several times during the performance.
The poor sound system and the shifting of position on the stage did not seem to disappoint the girls in the audience too much.
