The Difference in JLA & JSA
- One difference between the Justice Society of America and the Justice League of America is when the teams were first formed. The comic the JSA were first featured in was "All Star Comics" #3, released in the winter of 1940, during what is consider the gold age of comics. The JSA were the first team of superheroes in comic history. The comic the JLA first appeared in was "The Brave and the Bold" #28 in February 1960 toward the end of the silver age of comics.
- The original Justice League included Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, the Martian Manhunter, Barry Allen as Flash and Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. These founding members regularly reappear in JLA comics. The team roster has changed significantly since the first issue was released and other characters have joined including Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Atom, Black Canary, Captain Marvel, Plastic Man, Red Tornado, Cyborg and other Green Lanterns.
- The Justice Society's founding members were Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Sandman, Spectre, Doctor Fate, Hourman and Atom. The team members of JSA have changed over the years to include at times: Johnny Thunderbolt, Doctor Mid-Nite, Starman, Mister Terrific, Wildcat, Black Canary, as well as the Earth 2 versions of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Initially the JSA was designed by the publisher only to contain lesser known characters who didn't have their own titles.
- Besides the different major characters that comprised the two teams and the villains they fought, both JLA and JSA have very different storylines. Prior to the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" saga, both teams coexisted on alternative earths, the Justice Society on "Earth-Two" and the Justice League on "Earth-One" which enabled both teams to have Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman as members. DC Comic's decision to merge both universes into one saw the cancellation of the JSA continuity until it was relaunched after the "Infinite Crisis" event. The JLA incorporated some of the JSA characters after "Crisis on Infinite Earths."
