Your Curvy Questions Answered
Are you on the hunt for a plus-size swimsuit that flatters your curvy frame? I know that it can be really tough to find a swimsuit that you like, and I also know that choosing the right swimsuit for your body can often be another separate battle. These frequently asked questions are one that I have actually received over time when helping my fellow packed-with-curves ladies choose a bathing suit.
It truly depends on how you feel. Many plus-size women go for one-pieces, but if you have a shorter torso, don't forget that a tankini style will provide coverage similar to a two-piece, but will also give you the freedom of a one-piece. If you are afraid of muffin topping in your swimwear, pair your tankini with high-waisted swim briefs, preferably with some holding power in the belly region.
I would have to say that the swimsuits that provide the most support are those with underwire and that come with a halter or cris-cross back. The straps of your swimsuit should be quite thick and not too stretchy (or they can stretch out over the course of wear), and the back closure should be strong enough to handle the pressure of exaggerated movements like bending and stretching. I have found that I prefer halter and bikini tops that have a "free tie," meaning that I can knot the neck closure and/or the back without having to rely on the usual hook-and-eye. I can knot my swimsuit extra-tight, for example, and I won't need to worry about it slipping off.
I really enjoy Swimsuits for All, which I think balances affordability and style. I like many of Monif C.'s swimsuits as well, but it is more on the expensive side. If you can spend more on a swimsuit, I would recommend checking out what she has to offer.
I like both orange and hot pink. Hot pink is electric enough that it dispenses with the girly-girl vibe that some of us don't like much, but it is trendy. Both of these colors can be picked up in a pattern if you don't want to wear solids--in fact, I encourage doing just that.
Have fun with the pieces you pick, but don't spend too much. I have gotten my fabulous accessories stolen while I was flitting around in the water, and it ruined my day. Choose replaceable pieces like simple scarves, large hats, fun watches, and lightweight bangle bracelets. Don't pile it all on at once. Try to find a happy medium.
