Holistic Approach to Hair Removal

    Sugaring

    • Similar to waxing, sugaring uses a sticky paste that attaches to the hair and pulls it out.

Mix the juice from half of a lemon with 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of water. Put the mixture in a pot and, stirring frequently, bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer the mixture for half an hour. The mixture should be a smooth, amber-colored solution.

While you allow the mixture to cool and thicken for a few minutes, brush cornstarch or baby powder onto your clean, dry legs to absorb excess oils.

Using a clean popsicle stick, spread a thin layer of the solution onto a section of your leg. Place a strip of clean cotton cloth, like an old sheet, onto the wax. Rub the strip briskly for a few seconds to ensure that the sugar sticks securely to the cloth. Then pull your skin taut, and remove the strip quickly in the direction opposite to the hair growth.

You can also refrigerate the mixture in a plastic, air-tight container. Once the mixture is completely cool, use your hand to grab a large chunk. Roll the paste onto the hair you wish to remove, pushing down firmly. Pull it off, fold it over itself and repeat the process.

    Stringing or Threading

    • A less popular method in the United States, threading removes hair from the root using a string of cotton. A stringing technician will loop the thread and twist, trapping the unwanted hair in the loop and pulling it out from the root. This method is good for your skin, unlike traditional waxing, which can leave the skin irritated and inflamed. It also reduces the instance of ingrown hairs.

Pain levels are similar or less than with traditional tweezing, and results last for the same time period--two to four weeks. However, threading cannot be performed on areas such as your bikini line or knees, as it requires a flat surface. It is therefore ideal for eyebrows and upper lips.
