How to Use Supermarket Flyers to Teach English

    • 1). Warm-up your students to using the flyer by asking them a variety of questions. Ask them what they know or have seen about grocery stores in English-speaking countries. Direct their discussion toward the types of foods, prices and promotions that exist in the flyer or flyers you plan on distributing. Once this is done, have them contrast these preconceived notions with their food purchasing experiences at home. The key is to not overwhelm them with data, but to have them begin to vocalize their ideas about what they think grocery stores are like.

    • 2). Hand out the flyers and have the students read or look over them for a couple of minutes. Once they have had a chance to look at the materials closely, ask the students what stands out to them. If necessary, run some quick currency calculations to show what the prices of the different items are in the student's native currency. If they find the results surprising, enter into a dialogue with them about what might account for the differing values for food items.

    • 3). Instruct the students to use the flyers in practical ways. Put the students into groups and give them a task that they must complete using only the information provided on their flyer. They are required to come up with a dish that is capable of feeding four people, but must choose from the items on their flyer. To make the exercise more challenging, you might consider placing financial constraints on their purchases, such as only being able to spend $15 or less.
