How to Build a Mirror Screen

104 47
    • 1). Have the panels cut to size at a lumberyard. Mirrors are heavy, so choose a wood such as pine, which is strong and durable. Don't use plywood, which would not be a sturdy base for your mirror screen. Place the three wooden panels on a workbench or the ground.

    • 2). Varnish the panels using a brush. Let the panels dry. This will give your screen a professional shine and make it look more attractive.

    • 3). Use the measuring tape to divide each panel into thirds from the top. Mark a cross with a pencil on the edge of each panel 2 feet and 4 feet from the top. This is a reference point to know where to attach the hinges.

    • 4). Line up the three wooden panels next to each other. Make sure that the crosses are adjacent to each other.

    • 5). Use the drill to screw hinges in place between the first and second panel. Use the pencil markings as a reference point to position one hinge one-third from the top of the panels. Place a second hinge two-thirds from the top of the panels.

    • 6). Screw the hinges in place between the second and third panels using the drill. Use the pencil markings as a guide to place the first hinge 2 feet from the top of the panels. Position the second hinge 4 feet from the top of the panels.

    • 7). Decide how much of the screen you want to cover in mirror. Mirror made from glass is heavy, so it is impractical for a portable, indoor screen. To make the screen lighter so you can move it, cover just the middle panel in glass mirror. Or use smaller mosaic mirror tiles, cover all three panels in a reflective substitute such as metalized foil or use acrylic mirrors.

    • 8). Attach the mirror tiles, foil or acrylic mirrors to the wooden panels using glue (foil or plastic mirror) or grout (for mosaic tiles or glass mirror). Follow the adhesive application instructions to ensure that the mirror sticks to the wood properly.

    • 9). Decorate each panel with the mirrors in a pattern. Combine mosaic tiles with glass mirror tiles or cut out shapes from the metalized foil. To keep it simple, cover each panel entirely in acrylic mirror tiles so you have a full screen of mirror, yet it remains portable.

Test the mirror screen by folding it up then stretching it out again. Position it in the living room, bedroom, bathroom or garden to create private spaces or hide cluttered areas.
