Greg Scarnici - "12 Inch Freak

About.com Rating

Hilarious, or some may say “tacky”, this is basically a comedy or parody album. It is not to be taken seriously, therefore I will not apply my usual standard, and neither should you the “serious partier’, nor you the cerebral DJ/Producer who likes to apply labels like “techno” or “downbeat” to new club music. This disc is not for the prudes among us who are still sensitive about naughty curse words.

Think more of a Lenny Bruce meets Rodney Dangerfield or Eddie Murphy, ok? On “New Wave Girl” a lyric ends with “take me up the a**”, for example - Cute. Good beat on “I Wanna...”

12 Inch Freak by Greg Scarnici can gall you from the first strains of the “Intro-lude” where he targets the radio personality with his humor (as well on the “Disco-lude” mid-stream); Greg lets you have it! Racy, funny, frankly explicit sexual lyrics are all in play. Twelve inches, yeah, right...what is he talking about, his long-playing record? As for radio play, don’t even think about it unless it a subscription service, or some kittledeedees might happen upon these like we used to buy Playboy magazines and sneak them back in our parent’s house back in the late sixties – and find it amusingly likeable too! It is fun, guys...a novelty act, if you will.

What really caught my ear was track seventeen, the “Hater Anthem” because of the hook, “S*k My F*kin’ D*k, B*ch!!” Who knew that Greg would come up with a phrase worthy enough of being an Oprah-ism?

It is street like I like it and occurring against one of the best musical backdrops on the album, the haters need to beware. Also, sample “Oooh...Yeah...” for an immediate sexual rendez-vous with unexpected results that just may turn you. It's also the track with the best disco beat! The more you listen, the more “objectionable lyrics” you will hear, as on “Buy It, Roll It, Light It, Smoke It” – can you guess the theme therein maybe?

Hey, this Greg cat is very self-deprecating, and he doesn’t dig it when famous people get all serious about themselves either. As someone who has been on VH1 and other cable networks, he seems to know how to handle a good amount of success but I wonder how he would represent should this little collection of ditties really blow up? We will have to wait a while for that closure. So why should I be talking about this like it is serious? I wouldn’t be surprised if, like with Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time” one of these bombs makes it way to ‘hit” status in 2010. Of course, it will be the “severely clean edit” version. It is no holds barred with him poking fun at the stereotypes of the gay and hip hop communities.

OK, ba-da-binng, after the “Outro-lude on track eighteen – but wait, “Gimme More (Pills)” is a bonus track in-waiting. Don’t forget to wash with Vodka so when you wake up tomorrow with this CD in bed, the guilt behind a three beer goggle star rating won’t get you down. As Greg says, “Dance to the beat (questionable), Laugh to the beat”.

Released September 2009 on Greg Scarnici Music
