Sijay Switches Gears With Neo Soul Songs On Latest New Album, Detroit Club

I stumbled upon an artist named Sijay (pronounced CJ) who has a genre of music I couldn't fully identify. I'm going to call it Neo Soul music with R&B and Jazz influences. It's very soothing yet edgy and outside the box. So I looked into the artist - Sijay - and found out he used to be an electronic/dance artist! What a transition - I think this music suits his talent much better.

He's apparently quite an eclectic guy whose songwriting skills are evident in this response when he was asked about who he thinks his audience is. "Probably either a college student or a recent college graduate from a liberal arts college. When they aren't on Facebook or blogging about which 90's Nickelodeon show was the best, they are dabbling at their musical instruments, going to swanky bars smartly dressed to see jazz bands, and taking their significant others out to sushi. They are established and smart, but not too good to gulp down cheap red wine with a group of friends while listening to Jethro Tull, or NPR."

He goes on to say "They are musically smart, but not professionals. They know what time signatures are and can play at least beginner chords on piano and guitar. They would never tell you they were good, but they might just surprise you if you get some beer in them!"

He establishes himself with artists ranging in R&B, Soul, and Jazz such as Kate Bush, Robin Thicke, Calvin Richardson, Eric Bennet, Tyrese, Estelle, Adele, Carl Thomas, Country Boy, Anthony Hamilton, Tank, Jill Scott, Musiq, Johnny Gill, Monica, Ruben Studdard, Mint Condition, Anita Baker, Boyz 2 Men, Jennifer Hudson, Cee Lo Green, Jay Z, Ne-Yo, Ledisi, Raphael Saadiq, Wayne Brady, John Legend, Brian McKnight, Mayer Hawthore, John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne (and the Pariah Dogs), The Shins.

Sijay's musical mind is a complex instrument that has been resting in a rich marinade of Jazz Fusion, Pop, Progressive Rock, and R&B for just over 22 years. Every note he sings is meaningful; combining beautifully crafted tones with a rich timbre that eludes even the most experienced singers. Drawing inspiration from personal relationships, alternate history paths, and long and winding road trips, he catalogues a tapestry of original music that brings his passion for originality to the forefront.

Between 2000 and 2009, Sijay fronted several different bands, culminating with the acclaimed Progressive Rock outfit, Lobster Newberg. Through two Studio albums and a grueling National tour schedule, he was able to find exactly where in the musical world he was meant to be. Despite mastering the genre, the linear and over-the-top nature of Progressive Rock would soon become stale. This notion would open the floodgates for a creative revolution; after 10 years of writing for others, Sijay made the decision to write music for himself.
