How to Make a Hot Knife
- 1). Unplug your solderer and make sure it is completely cool before beginning. Remove the tip of your soldering iron, and set the base aside.
- 2). Use a hammer to flatten the tip of the soldering iron. It may take several hits before you have created a completely flat tip. Keep hitting it with the hammer until it is uniformly flat all over. Be careful not to bend or damage the end that attaches to the soldering iron, as you need to be able to reattach it.
- 3). Use the knife sharpening stone to create a sharp edge on one side. The edge does not need to be sharp enough to cut. It just needs to be angled as opposed to blunt. A thinner, angled surface cuts much better than a thick, blunt one.
- 4). Reattach the tip to the soldering iron. Make sure it goes on snugly, and makes a good connection. Plug the iron in, and the tip will get hot, just as a hot knife would. You can now use your hot knife to complete plastic crafts and other craft projects.
