How to Estimate the Cost of a Room Addition Project

101 18
It isn't always possible to plan for the unexpected. When you purchase a home, you might have visions of filling it up with knickknacks, guests and family additions, but before you know it you may very well out-grow the space you are in. Moving is a hassle, especially when you are happy in your location and are just looking for an extra room to stretch out in. If you have the property, you can have that extra room.

Building an extra room onto your house is not as complex of a project as you may imagine—though it is something that requires a good deal of expertise. Before you decide to take on a project like this, consult with a professional contractor. There are city laws that'll have to be adhered to and safety standards you won't want to mess with.

Calculating the Cost of a Room Addition

Adding an extra room onto your home is a much less stressful and often cheaper alternative to packing up and moving. But before you begin demolishing walls, take the time to set your budget and determine what you can accomplish in the price point you have available to you.

Here are a few tips on determining the cost of a room addition project:

Flooring Remodeling

The type of flooring you go for is one of the largest determining factors in the overall cost of the project. You have several options here:

* You can get materials for laminate flooring for less than $1 per square foot.
* Ceramic tile is about the same price, starting at less than $1 per square foot. The higher quality the tile, the greater the price, however, and a porcelain tile floor can cost up to $50 per square foot.
* Carpet starts at about $2 per square foot and may go as high as $9 per square foot.
* Hard wood floors often range from several dollars to about $14 per square foot.

Windows Remodeling

A sliding panel window may cost anywhere between $50 and $200. Thicker glass in the windows will cost more, while a skylight may cost as much as $2,000. The ultimate cost of windows will be determined b how many windows you choose to install, and the quality of the glass.

Keep in mind that adding a room to a house may cost about 50% more than the room would have cost if building it at the time of the initial construction. Other costs to keep in mind include electrical wiring, demolition and insulation. On average, adding a room to your house may cost between $80 and $130 total per square foot. Opting to higher quality materials will add to this expense.
