Directions for an Elmo Cake

    • 1). Bake the cake mix according to package instructions. If you have an Elmo head mold, bake the mix in it. Otherwise, bake the cake in a square tin and you can cut the shape out by hand.

    • 2). Remove the cake from the oven and allow to cool as directed. If you used a mold, place the cake on a board to begin adding the icing. If you baked it in a tin, place the cake on a board and cut out Elmo's shape with a knife. Keep in mind that Elmo's head is slightly oval with his big eyes on top.

    • 3). Mix together icing to create the colors you need for Elmo's face. Add a few drops of red and orange color to the white frosting flavor of your choice, to make separate red and orange frostings. Add a few drops of black color to frosting for a third color.

    • 4). Fill an icing bag with black frosting, then attach the round decorating tip. Create Elmo's mouth towards the lower portion of the cake. Draw an open mouth with upturned corners for a smile.

    • 5). Fill a new icing bag with orange frosting and create Elmo's nose in the center of the cake. In a third icing bag, fill with white frosting to create Elmo's eyes. With the black bag of frosting, draw on the pupils in the center of the eyes.

    • 6). Fill a new icing bag with the red frosting and attach the open star tip. Squeeze out small stars over the entire uncovered surface of Elmo's face to complete.
