What If I Still Need Money for College?

104 9

    Work During School

    • In some cases a school financial aid office can make arrangements with you to pay off the remainder of your tuition bill on a monthly payment plan. If so, find a part-time job that fits into your schedule to help pay your tuition. Working while going to college is difficult, but it can be done if you establish a schedule for classes, studying and work. If the financial aid package allows you to participate in a work-study program you can find employment at the school that allows you to study while on the job.

    Live at Home

    • If one of the costs included on your educational bill is the cost of living on campus, consider living at home to save money. If you're away from home, look for a cheaper living arrangement at a nearby house instead. The cost for college dorms is often high compared to the cost of living off campus.

    Less Expensive School

    • When the college you want to attend is too expensive, choose a less-expensive school. In some cases you can take courses at another, more affordable, school then transfer to your first-choice college when you've saved up more money. Talk to the school's financial aid and admissions office about your options for attending the school in the future when you have the funds you need.

    Warnings About Private Debt

    • Some students choose to make up the difference by taking on more debt. Some banks offer students private loans at higher rates than government-backed loans (like the Stafford program). These lenders may require you to pay off the loan while you're in school and are sometimes much less understanding of the financial needs of struggling students. Avoid taking on additional debt.
