Between Photographing and Painting

What I am trying to communicate here, of course, is something still dealing with an art of photography. At least, I still use a camera and some other related equipments, like computer. However, I do not do an instant photography. An idea or concept is the primary. Next, I make a visual design from it, before finally I release the shutter. Therefore, people might categorize this as a conceptual photography.

Me, myself? I do not really care about the brand given. What I do know is that I want to extract humanities from the aspects of some stories of life and expose them through special themes, which can be freely interpreted according to the audience's personal experiences. This is what then becomes the thing that motivates me to make (making pictures instead of just taking pictures) stories through photos. Because of what I intend to do, I think, I would rather call myself a photography artist han a photographer.

Combining This kind of photography is similar to painting. Moreover, perhaps I am combining both. As if doing paintings, all the aspects in mind are sketched on a paper. From the sketches, at least, I can imagine how far they can possibly become the works of photography. I have chosen a theme before, and it is the result of a sense-based brainstorming. Some items are needed supportively, like icons, properties, models and settings.

To find the icons, properties or models, I need to hunt. Usually, it is smoothly undertaken, but sometimes, there are some noteworthy obstacles. Sometimes, it is not easy to find particular icons to represent some characters or emotion that I do not want to expose explicitly; I want it more implicit. In addition, it is getting harder when I want to create characters giving consecutive meanings. Another significant obstacle is if some people consider the icons, properties or expressions that I want to use as taboo.

Prior to the final shot session, I usually make photo dummies according to my sketches. The dummies are then rechecked, whether all properties, poses and displays fit me. If not yet fit, I usually remake the photos until I get the ones that, I think worth seeing. Likely Idealistic To my experience, photography can happen anywhere, both outdoor and indoor. Thus, indoor photography can take place in a studio with the studio lighting, but can also in every place with the available light. Obviously, it depends on the necessity.

If I need portraiture, for example, usually I prefer to use the available light so that I can catch the aura of the photo directly with the circumstances encouraging. The quickest photo execution was the one I did after the idea appeared in mind; no sketch was required. But it rarely happen. Usually, I make photo couple of days after the idea comes and the sketch is made, or even couple of weeks or months after. The idea itself sometimes appears unexpectedly, and if possible, I usually make the sketch in no time.

I even used tissue papers when I did not have papers to make a sketch. For sure, most of those activities are my personal projects. In doing so, they carry their idealism. Sometimes, they become very frustrating since they are too idealistic. In whatsoever, I become very detail, and every little mistake can cause failures. Thus, it needs remake and repair. Through this art of photography, I want to share every emotional experience, and at the same time, expose every detail in a story.

Besides, there is a personal satisfaction in it: it is to express my artistic passion and give out a distinctive point of interest in photography.
