How to Test for Asbestos Fibers
- 1). Do not touch or disturb any area that is suspected of containing asbestos. Try to locate any documents that may be present detailing the materials and construction of the house. Look for details of the building materials and brand names used if possible.
- 2). Use a phone book reference, a referral or an Internet search to locate and identify a professional asbestos facility tester you can hire to perform a test. Choose a tester who can provide you with a valid contractor's license and certification that he can perform asbestos testing properly.
- 3). Cordon off the area in the home that may be disturbed or crumbling and is suspected of containing asbestos. Restrict access to the room or area by closing off doors and keep the area shut from normal traffic and access.
- 4). Allow the tester access when he arrives to the home to perform the necessary tests and collection of sample material. Allow for a few weeks for the tester to perform an analysis of the collected samples and to provide you a report.
- 5). Do not engage with the testing firm to also perform the cleanup and asbestos mitigation. Use a different company for cleanup work to make sure to receive a competitive rate and honest work unrelated to the evaluation.
