How to Make a Dog Leash Out of Grocery Bags
- 1). Clear and prep the crafting area. Gather the plastic bags, glue and paint brush and set them on a clean dry surface. Place a small amount of glue on a plate or clean surface.
- 2). Cut the bags. Cut the handles off the plastic bags and cut the bags down the sides to create 15 squares of plastic.
- 3). Create the plastic strands. Flatten the first plastic bag on your working surface. Load the paint brush and paint on glue to the bottom of the bag. Place the end of the second bag on the glued end of the first bag. Apply gentle pressure on the second bag where it attaches to the first bag to ensure the glue has adhered to the bags.
- 4). Continue gluing the end of one bag to the beginning of the other until you have 10 bags glued together. Glue the remaining five bags together separately in the same way.
- 5). Secure the strips to the swivel hook. Fold the 10 glued bags in half to create two long even sides. Add the strip of five bags to the same hand. Twist them together and thread them through the loop of the swivel hook. There should be three strands, one from the 5 bag strand and two created from folding the 10-bag strand in half. Pull the strands into a knot around the loop and pull tightly to secure.
- 6). Braid the three strands together tightly. Take the left side and fold it over the middle strand and under the right strand. Then take the right side and thread it over the middle and under the left side. Continue braiding until you are about 3 inches from the end of the plastic. Make sure to leave these 3 inches unbraided, as they will secure the handle in a later step.
- 7). Make a wire hook. Bend the triangular portion of a hanger until it is straight. Use your hands or a hammer to bend the hooked end of the hanger into a long, narrow hook by lessening the space between the curved metal, with an approximate space of 1/2 an inch between the two sides of the hook.
- 8). Create the handle. Bend the leash 3 inches from end of the braided section and thread the 3 inches of unbraided plastic through the leash with the curved end of your wire hanger hook. Thread the plastic back through the leash until you reach the ends of the non-braided plastic.
- 9). Tuck any loose plastic in the spaces between the braided plastic and trim the plastic with scissors to create a neat, tidy look.
