How to Make Frosted Wax Leaves
- 1). Select large perfectly shaped leaves that are free from insect damage. Choose leaves that a fresh or partially dried; a little curling on the ends is actually desired. Avoid dry and brittle leaves. Dry the leaves by wiping with paper towels or a soft cloth.
- 2). Cut or break the paraffin into small chunks. Melt wax in a double boiler or in a can set in a pan of boiling water. Allow the wax to melt completely. Remove the wax from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- 3). Hold the leaf by the stem and dip into the melted wax. Allow the leaf to drip and hold for 20 seconds until the wax cools and hardens. Dip in cold water and repeat to to create a thicker coating of wax and to give an icy appearance. Lay on waxed paper to dry completely.
- 4). Add a nice touch to the waxed leaves once they are completely cooled and dried, by wrapping the wire around the base of the stem.
- 5). Make hand dipped candles by cutting a 18-inch section and folding it in half. Hold the wick from the center point and dip both ends into the melted wax. Quickly immerse them in cold water. Dip the wick into the melted wax to create a second coat and immediately immerse in cold water. Repeat the process until the candles are the thickness you desire.
- 6). Gather several pine cones and spray with silver spray paint. Cover all areas and allow to dry on old newspapers or waxed paper. Attach floral picks by wrapping the wire around the base of the cone.
- 7). Select natural branches that are 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Cut the branches to 3 to 4 inches high and drill holes to accommodate the candles. Vary the height of the holders slightly to create a more natural appearance. Add a drop or two of melted wax to the holes to hold candles in place. Insert candles holding them erect and straight until the wax hardens. Display the candles in the wooden holders. Place evergreen boughs among the holders. Add waxed leaves and silver cones by inserting the floral picks into the evergreens to create a wintry display. Spray evergreens lightly with spray snow, if desired.
