The Overlooked Alternative To Improve Survival In Chronic Kidney Disease Patients On Dialysis

Growing numbers of people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are choosing to receive four to six dialysis treatments per week overnight at dialysis centers or at home. One 2013 study mentioned that thrice weekly maintenance Hemodialysis (HD) was associated with, "An extremely high morbidity (disorder)," a "relatively low quality of life" due in part to a high level of dependence and unemployment; and a lower survival rate.

The most common causes for death in people with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) are not directly related to the disease itself. Instead, the most common causes of death are Cardiovascular (heart) events, particularly sudden death and severe congestive heart failure (Cardiomyopathy).

Emerging evidence is suggesting that sudden death in a person with ESRD is most commonly caused by fatal heart rhythms originating from thickened and scarred tissue in the wall of the heart's major pumping chamber (left ventricle). This scar tissue in the heart is associated with weakening the heart muscle, leading to chronic congestive heart failure. Also, associated with heart failure is liquid volume overload which occurs in people with CKD and worsens as the disease progresses.

While numerous studies support the fact that conventional dialysis improves heart abnormality in approximately 50% of people, it worsens the scarring and thickening of the heart tissue in approximately 30% of standard dialysis users. Those people who had worsening left ventricular thickening and scarring also had a poorer survival rate. In direct contrast, almost 90% of people who conduct Nocturnal Dialysis show significant improvement in heart strength, reduction in Cardiovascular events, as well as higher survival.

Added benefits of Nocturnal Dialysis include improved phosphate control without any dietary restrictions or medications, and more liberal potassium and fluid intake. Further, Anemia improves without as much or any EPO, and blood pressure often improves to normal without medications or at least reduced dosages. With Nocturnal Dialysis, there are virtually no diet restrictions; a person's appetite tends to improve along with their strength and overall nutrition. When strength and appetite improve with fewer restrictions, quality of life usually improves as well.
