Decide on the time of your visit. Planning a trip to the Adirondacks can be a completely different experience for everyone depending on the season in which it is planned for. The fall and winter months are excellent for hiking, skiing, ice skating, and other snow-related sports. The spring and summer months are also great for hiking, as well as white water rafting, boating, and swimming. - 2

Obtain input from those going on the vacation. Note that the Adirondacks span millions of acres in upstate New York, and that the distance between any two locations could be great. The most popular regions include Lake George, Lake Placid, and Old Forge. - 3

Lay out an itinerary. Plan out your activities for as long as you will be on vacation. Make sure to include some rainy day or poor weather backups, such as shopping and/or other indoor activities. Research restaurants to get a taste of local food. The Adirondacks are also riddled with historic sites which can be a fun and educational activity for families to take part in. For example, the 1980 Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid and there is a visitors center to learn more about the games.
