How to Cut Multiple Steel Roofing

104 233
    • 1). Stack the steel roofing sheets that need to be cut. Make sure none of the sheets are upside down and that they are all aligned. The paint on all the steel sheets should be facing up. If some sheets are longer than others, then make sure that one end aligns properly.

    • 2). Clamp the sheets together, beginning at each corner. After these clamps have been secured, add clamps down the middle and in between the corners. Place plastic bottle caps between the clamp flanges and the painted, metal surface of the steel to prevent the clamps from scratching the paint. You may also use rubber clamp covers purchased with the clamps at any hardware store.

    • 3). Measure and place marks where you want to cut on the top sheet of steel roofing. Using a straight edge, connect the marks with a metal marking crayon or a sharpie marker. Make sure the marks are dark and visible.

    • 4). Cut into the metal stack, following the line you placed with a straight edge. Use a circular saw and a metal cutting blade for straight lines and for thick stacks of metal. If you have a thin stack of steel sheets or a mark that is not straight or curved, use the jig saw with a metal cutting blade. Make the cuts slowly, and stay to the outside of the line. After the cuts have been completed, use acetone to remove any sharpie marker that remains. Touch up the cut edges with primer and matched enamel paint to prevent rust.
