How to Waterproof Anfibio Leather
- 1). Treat Anfibio leather equipment or gear with Aquaseal Crème. Aquaseal uses oils not unlike those used in tanneries blended with silicone and waxes. The cream will not leave a residue and leather will retain its breathability. Apply the cream evenly to all leather surfaces with a clean cloth or the Aquaseal applicator. The film that develops on the leather will dry over the course of an hour. Polish this away with a clean cloth.
- 2). Apply Skidmore's Beeswax Waterproofing to Anfibio leather. Though Skidmore's Leather Cream can build up on leather clothing or gear to create a certain degree of waterproofing, Skidmore's Beeswax Waterproofing is formulated specifically for this result with natural oils and beeswax. There is no silicone or other drying agents used in Skidmore's, so allow two hours for gear to completely cure after application by hand or cloth.
- 3). Treat full-grain leather gear with Nikwax Waterproofing Wax. Nikwax can be applied with a clean cloth or bare hands, though contact with eyes should be avoided. A blend of waxes that are all water-based, it spreads easily and appears to soak into the leather, giving it a renewed appearance. Wait an hour before using treated equipment. Like Skidmore's, there is no silicone used in Nikwax, so it is arguably a more natural application.
- 4). Look for equipment or gear made from Reversed Anfibio. If treating and potentially re-treating your gear does not appeal to you, consider using Anfibio leather that has been engineered to be waterproof. Reversed Anfibio leather is impregnated with silicone during the tanning process, which fills the pores of the hide and makes the leather virtually impenetrable by water.
