What Are Bitewings And How Do They Help Your Teeth?

Dental X-rays are extremely useful for diagnosing problems with the teeth, gums and jaw.

Some of the problems they can spot include tooth decay, periodontal disease, impacted teeth, bite problems and even tumors. Bitewings are dental X-rays which are used to check the back teeth.

They show the crown of the tooth so help the dentist find decay located in between teeth, identify various stages of gum disease and spot problems with tooth alignment.

Bitewings are also excellent for detecting a buildup of dental tartar, and are sometimes used to measure bone loss due to advanced periodontal disease.

They get their name from how they look: The film resembles a "T-shape" that's placed inside the jaw. It covers both the upper and lower teeth, and the patient bites a tab in the middle to hold the film in place.  An X-ray camera is then used to photograph several teeth at once.

As many early dental conditions don't have symptoms, without bitewings, they may not be spotted or may continue to grow unchecked. So even if your teeth feel fine, it's important to get bitewings taken as needed.

Even though the range of dental technology is increasing fast, bitewings are still an important part of your dental care routine.

How and why your sense of taste can change in your senior years

There are many factors that can lead to our sense of taste changing as we get older and this can mean we don't enjoy our food as much as before. This change can result from certain illnesses and diseases - or often the medications we take to treat them.

Some of the disorders which affect taste and smell are Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and chronic liver and kidney diseases.  But there can also be physical changes in the mouth itself which affect taste. One of these is that aging can reduce the number of taste buds on our tongue, which can make food seem bland.

As we age, the cells responsible for our sense of smell are replaced more slowly and our sense of smell also has a big impact on how things taste. Dental and oral health problems that affect our sense of taste include dry mouth, gum disease and chronic bad breath.

Dentures can also get in the way and limit out enjoyment of food - either by providing a physical barrier or through denture adhesives we use. You can limit the affect of these changes by having regular dental examinations and professional cleaning.

Your cosmetic dentist Montgomery al may be able to suggest treatments and medications that improve your sense of taste such as artificial saliva.
