What Is Propecia Used for

104 11

    Function

    • Propecia functions by restricting dihydrotesterone's formation within the scalp. Reducing DHT also works to limit any further shrinking of the hair follicles.

    DHT

    • It is important to understand what dihydrotestosterone is. It is classified as an androgen, a male sex hormone, and helps to manage and stimulate masculine traits. It is capable of shrinking down the hair follicles until they are no longer able to create hair that is visible.

    Male-Pattern Hair Loss

    • Male-pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss. It is progressive and generally starts with the hairline receding. It also can start gradually with the balding of the crown. Males with increased levels of DHT in their scalps are susceptible to male-pattern baldness.

    Side Effects

    • Some side effects are possible with taking Propecia, although they are uncommon. These side effects include ejaculation problems; signs of allergic reaction, such as hives and itching; the face and the lips becoming swollen; skin rash, enlargement of the breasts; breast tenderness; nipple discharge; and breast lumps.

    Warnings

    • Propecia is solely intended for the treatment of hair loss in males and under no circumstances should be used by females, as it is not safe for them, particularly for pregnant women, as Propecia could cause damage to male fetuses. Also, if an individual is allergic to any of Propecia's ingredients, such as finasteride, they should not use it.
