How to Prevent Gastroenteritis in Dogs
- 1). Gastroenteritis can be caused by your dog eating food or other materials he shouldn’t. Since canines are very curious by nature, it’s important to keep toxic substances like anti-freeze, chocolate and raisins out of their reach.
- 2). If you start serving your dog a different food, monitor his behavior closely. Some dogs have dietary intolerance that can cause problems. If you notice a change in the dog, try switching back to the previous food and see if the situation rights itself.
- 3). If your dog suffers frequent vomiting or diarrhea (twice or more monthly), contact your vet. Ask her to check for abdominal and/or metabolic disorders.
- 4). Keep your dog's vaccinations up to date. Gastroenteritis can be caused by fungal, parasitic and bacterial infections. Also, ask your vet about starting your pet on a parasite-prevention medication.
