Easy Directions to Grow Sugar Crystals
- 1). Boil 2 cups of water in a pot over medium heat, and then add in the sugar. Stir continuously with the wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved. The liquid should be clear.
- 2). Pour the sugar water into a glass jar. Be careful - the pot and the water will be hot. Cover the jar with a small piece of waxed paper.
- 3). Tie a small piece of the cotton string onto the middle of the pencil. The string should be long enough to hang down until it almost touches the bottom of the jar. Tie the weight onto the end of the string.
- 4). Dip the string into the sugar water, and lay it out straight on a small piece of wax paper. Cover the jar with the other piece of wax paper, and leave the string to dry for a couple of days. As the water evaporates from the string, small sugar crystals will form. These are called seed crystals and they form the base on which your sugar crystals will grow.
- 5). Hang the dried string in the center of the jar, and cover the jar with a piece of wax paper to keep dust out. The jar must not be sealed as water must be allowed to evaporate. Leave the jar undisturbed for seven days. After seven days you can remove your sugar crystals from the jar.
