How to Make a Witch Gown Out of a Red Dress
- 1). Help your child try on the thrift store dress. Use a marker to draw an x at the location of your child’s knees and mid-calf.
- 2). Place the dress flat down on the work surface. Cut the dress off so it hits at the child’s mid-calf length. Gather a small section of the skirt in your hands and twist the fabric. Cut a section out of the twist, about at the length at the child’s knees to create a tear or hole in the skirt. Repeat around the skirt.
- 3). Help your child try on the dress another time. Unroll a length of thick, black-and-red patterned ribbon long enough to wrap around your child’s waist two or three times. Cut small v-shapes into both ends of the ribbon to create a zig-zag edge.
- 4). Help your child put on a black turtleneck or long-sleeved t-shirt and black or patterned tights. Put on the dress over the black undergarments. Wrap the ribbon belt around the waist two or three times. Tie the ribbon in a bow to cinch the waist, helping the too-large dress stay on.
- 5). Add a mid-calf length black tutu or petticoat under the dress if the tatters make it feel too bare or risqué. Finish off the costume with a witch hat and a pair of black boots or shoes.
