Gift giving, Santa Claus, togetherness -- these are just some of the things that make Christmas such an exciting holiday for children. If you're a parent or teacher of preschool aged children, engage them in craft making activities that pertain to the holiday. Not only can such crafts teach children about Christmas, but they also promote fine motor development and are enjoyable to create.

    Handprint Wreath

    • Use little one's handprints to create a Christmas wreath. Help children trace their hand 10 times on green construction paper and cut prints out. Cut a hole out of the center of a paper plate and have kids glue their handprints along the plate so the fingers are pointing out and the wrists are facing the center -- wrists may overlap a bit. After the plate is covered with the handprints, fashion a bow from red ribbon and glue it to the bottom of the wreath. If you'd like, further embellish the wreath with green, red, silver or gold glitter. Loop another red ribbon through the top of the wreath, which can be used to hang it.

    Paper Christmas Tree

    • Create a Christmas tree from torn pieces of paper. Print out an image of a Christmas tree from clip art and cut it out. Trace the image onto pieces of construction paper or poster board and cut them out. Provide the children with the tree shapes, as well as green construction or crepe paper. Instruct the kids to tear the pieces of green paper and glue the torn pieces to the tree shape. When the tree is completely covered, have the children make ornaments for the tree by dipping their fingers into red and yellow finger paint and pressing them onto the tree. From yellow construction paper, cut out a star and have them glue it to the top of the tree.

    Rudolph Clothespin Ornaments

    • Children can make a Rudolph tree ornament from clothespins. Glue two wooden clothespins together at the base -- the openings of the pins serve as antlers and legs for the deer. Have children paint the clothespins brown. When the paint is dry, have them glue two small googly eyes onto the center of the joined pins. A red pom pom glued underneath the googly eyes serves as Rudolph's glowing nose. Cut a length of green or red yarn and tie it around the center of the clothespins, forming a loop. The yarn loop can be used to hang the ornament from a Christmas tree.
