How Do I Cover a Rough Backsplash?

    Mirrored Backsplash

    • 1). Measure the backsplash area to get the approximate size of the mirror that you need to cover the backsplash. Get a plain mirror piece cut to the size of the backsplash area.

    • 2). Hold the mirror up against the backsplash area to make sure it fits correctly. If the mirror is slightly too small, center it in the backsplash area and mark the edges every few inches so that you can easily line it up again.

    • 3). Place frameless mirror clips on the edges of the mirror that you want to hang, using a clip every 4 to 5 inches, and hold the mirror back up against the wall. Mark the location of each clip on the wall, then take the mirror down and install the clips per the instructions that came with them into the locations you marked on the top and sides of the backsplash.

    • 4). Slide the mirror up into the clips that you installed on the wall. Install the bottom clips once the mirror is in place.

    Tiled Backsplash

    • 1). Measure the backsplash to determine the amount of tiles that you need. Buy enough tiles to cover the entire surface, plus an additional 10 percent for mistakes. Choose glazed tiles with nonporous surfaces, like porcelain or ceramic.

    • 2). Cover the area beneath the rough backsplash onto which you want to install the tiles. Tape down plastic sheeting to prevent dust and drips on counters and appliances. If you are covering a backsplash over a stove or porcelain sink, it's a good idea to put down some padding over the stove or sink in case you drop tiles, which may cause damage to surfaces.

    • 3). Measure down each side of the backsplash area, marking the center. Then measure across the top and mark the center, and along the bottom and mark the center. Put a straightedge between the two side marks and draw a line between them, then draw a line between the marks at the top and bottom of the space, which splits the wall into four squares and marks the center of the wall.

    • 4). Mix a batch of thinset mortar and spread the mortar along two of the center lines of the wall with a trowel. Place tiles on the wall by lining them up against the four corners of the center marks you made in Step 3 first, moving from there out toward the edges of the backsplash area. Put tile spacers between all tiles and, when you get to the outer edges of the backsplash, cut tiles down with a tile saw where necessary.

    • 5). Grout a tiled backsplash after 24 hours to fill in the spaces in the tiles. Caulk around the edges of the backsplash to prevent moisture from seeping in.
