Can I Put Furniture Over a Heat Pump Floor Register?

104 8

    Blocked or Diverted Airflow

    • Furniture over a heat pump floor register may divert or block cooled or warmed air, leading to a stuffy room that is either too hot or too cold. A high-backed chair placed over a register may trap the incoming air in the lower part of the room near the chair, chilling or warming the legs of anyone who sits in the chair, while a sofa or recliner may block the airflow entirely.

    Dust Accumulation

    • If you put furniture over a heat pump floor register, you will not be able to vacuum near the register as frequently and thoroughly as necessary to keep dust from accumulating in and around the register. Dust trapped in the register can enter the heat pump's interior ducts and make the entire system run less efficiently.

    Workaround

    • If you have a small room that cannot house furniture without placing a piece over a heat pump floor register, attach an air deflector to the blocked register or install a pop-up floor register. Both of these devices direct the airflow to the side instead of straight up. Cover the altered registers with furniture pieces that have a high clearance, such as a table or high-backed chair, so the air deflected from the register can freely move into the room.
