Triple J Hottest One Hundred - More Than A Countdown

102 14
Australians love national traditions. We are loyal patriots who love a good excuse to party and celebrate our sunburnt country. Australia Day, which is celebrated on January 26 every year commemorates the arrival of the first fleet in Australia at Sydney Cove in 1788 and is celebrated in true Aussie style - with BBQs, beers, friends and family.

Another tradition has morphed with the national day celebrations. Since the 1980s, radio station Triple J has been compiling a hottest 100 list of the previous year's most popular songs. While originally released on New Year's Day, the countdown is now aired on Australia Day.

The growth in popularity of the countdown - which now attracts over 1 million voters - has made it a fixture at any Australia Day celebration. The Hottest 100 countdown blares at all BBQs as Aussies anxiously await the announcement of the number 1 song. For Australians, it's the perfect background music for all the celebrations!

The Hottest 100 is not limited to Australian artists, and boasts the title of the world's largest music poll. All the songs and positions in the countdown are determined by the public.

Did you know?

-Since the countdown started, Australian band Powderfinger has featured the most times, with 22 songs included in the Hottest 100 between 1996 and 2009.
-Dave Grohl has featured in the countdown 29 times - 4 times with Nirvana, 19 times with the Foo Fighters, 5 times with Queens of the Stone Age and once with Them Crooked Vultures.
-Winner of the 2010 Countdown was Angus and Julia Stone with 'Big Jet Plane'. This is the first countdown since 1994 that features a female vocalist in the #1 song.
-Midyear 2009, Triple J held an 'All Time' Triple J Hottest 100 Countdown. Nirvana with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' came in at #1.

The Triple J Hottest 100 countdown is one of the most anticipated Australian music events of the year. It has also been closely incorporated with Australia Day celebrations making it much more than a countdown. Buy the Triple J Hottest 100 CD and remember how and where you spent Australia Day in 2011. The Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time CD is also available - it's a great reminder of Australia's favourite songs over the past decade or two.
