103 13
Buying a new puppy to add to the family is a decision which needs a lot of consideration.
Before shopping for your new puppy you should do plenty of research to find out all you can about the background, general behavior patterns and the all important sociability of the breed you are considering.
If you have very young children, would a puppy be advisable for them at this stage and if so what breed is most suitable? Think about the future.
When the puppy becomes a grown dog, will you still want to own it and will it be fun for the family? If it is a big breed will it outgrow your home? It is easy to overlook the fact that this cute little puppy will grow into a big dog which unless properly trained may become too much for you to handle.
All dogs need some degree of training if not a complete course.
When they know that you the leader whom they must please and obey they will settle happily into their everyday home life.
The day you bring your new puppy home, try to make sure that the first night away from mom isn't too stressful an experience for the little fellow.
The puppy should have a warm and comfortable bed to sleep in.
A blanket would be good and maybe a soft toy to play with too.
If you have a good old fashioned clock with a fairly loud tick put this in or near the pups bed.
The steady tick resembles the beat of his moms heart.
Your puppy will relax and will not feel so alone.
The first 3 to 4 months of the puppy's life are extremely important.
This a time of much learning from experience and if you get the training right now, you will have a well-trained and obedient dog.
Remember that this will not happen in just a day or two.
If you train him regularly, persistently and use a lot of patience with him during these few weeks, you and your dog will understand one another and he will be your best friend for the rest of his life.
Allow your puppy plenty of time to get accustomed to his new home.
Then when he is ready for it introduce your puppy to other dogs and people.
Invite some friends, and their dogs, to come and visit the new puppy.
You could even organise a Puppy Shower.
This is quite easy to do and the dogs will enjoy it.
Most dogs love to be with people and other animals and will certainly enjoy the visitors.
The main purpose of the party is to get the puppy accustomed to strange dogs and people so it is really quite simple to organize.
You could decorate the room with balloons and streamers.
This will get the puppy used to strangers and unusual things being around him.
Have some toys around for the guest dogs to play with.
This can be a great way to teach your new puppy to share things.
A few big dog guests could quite possibly be somewhat rough and boisterous for the puppy, so make sure that he is alright but don,t remove him from the fun.
This is how he will learn to interact with other dogs successfully.
The puppy must learn not to be afraid of or intimidated by the other dogs.
If you look after your new puppy in the way you should you will have a friend for life.
