Misto Olive Oil Sprayer Review
About.com Rating
If you are looking for a replacement for store-bought propellant driven oil sprays, this Misto Olive Oil sprayer might be for you. It saves money over buying can after can of cooking spray, and allows you to control the amount of oil sprayed onto your food.
Usefullness
Is the Misto Olive Oil Sprayer a good buy when it comes to adding a useful gadget to your kitchen tool collection? My answer would be yes.
Especially in low calorie cooking, when controlling the amount of added fat and oil to your food is essential, having a device that allows to you to spray as much or as little olive oil on your food as you wish certainly comes in very handy. I found that the mister, when filled with olive oil, came in handy when preparing vegetables to be grilled or roasted. It also comes in handy when you want to lightly oil french bread or Italian bread for baking, or any other meat of food item where the oil needs to only be lightly applied.
The mister can also be used to spray baking sheets, bread pans, and other pans where it is required that you spray with cooking spray to prevent sticking. While the Misto may not coat a pan quite the same as a chemical propelled canned spray from the grocery store, it does a fine job without using the chemicals found in store bought cooking sprays.
Reliability
There are mixed reviews out there on the web about the Misto Olive Oil Sprayer. Some have had good luck with the sprayer, and some have not.
There are a few important things to remember when using your Misto to assure that it performs as intended. First of all, be sure to only fill the Misto Sprayer half full with oil. The mister performs by using built up pressure from the user pumping the sprayer. If the sprayer is overfilled, it will not work properly. Also, the sprayer cannot be over-pumped or the oil will mist too much resulting in an oil mist that will hang in the air as opposed to landing on your food or pan where intended.
I have had no issues with the mister performing and staying in tact. Whether or not it will last for years and years is yet to be decided.
Price
The Misto Olive Oil Sprayer certainly seems to be a money save if you are using it to replace store bought canned cooking spray. Where the Misto retails for right around ten dollars per unit, a can of cooking spray at the store easily costs nearly three dollars per can and has to be replaced over and over again. With the Misto you can pay the ten dollars one time for a sprayer, and then continually fill it with fresh oil for a nice money savings.
When compared to the competition, the Misto sprayer sits about in the middle price wise. Several other brands of oil sprayers retail for right around ten dollars, where a few brands do retail in a range closer to fifteen to twenty dollars per unit. Does the higher price of other misters on the market equate to better quality? That I don't know.
Wrap-Up
Overall I would recommend the Misto Olive Oil sprayer if you are looking for an inexpensive gadget for oil spritzing. It works well, saves money over purchasing cans of cooking spray over and over again, and is not a huge investment if you were to purchase one and later decide against it. It is certainly worth a try. I give the Misto sprayer four stars because it works nicely and is worth the expense.
I did not give it five stars only because in my experience the user does have to be very careful to pump the sprayer just the right amount or the sprayer does not spray properly. This can a little tricky at first until the user gets the hang of it.
