How to Measure a Spline
- 1). Measure the width of the top of the frame. Place the end of the tape measure on the outside edge of one side and measure to the outside edge of the other side. Record the measurement on a piece of paper. Many people try to measure the old spline, but this is not a good idea since the old spline is usually in pieces and damaged.
- 2). Use the tape measure to measure the length of one side of the frame. Measure from the outside edge of the top of the side to the outside edge of the bottom of the frame. Record the measurement on the paper.
- 3). Repeat the measuring process for the bottom of the the frame and for the other side. The reason you measure each side is that the frame may not be exactly square and the lengths of the sides may vary slightly.
- 4). Add the measurements together for the two sides and the top and bottom. Add 3 or 4 inches to the total. Having a little too much spline is better than not having enough.
