How to Cut or Grind Putty From Around a Metal Window Frame

    • 1). Wrap an old rag or cloth around the blade of a wood chisel or putty knife to keep the blade from scratching the glass or the window's metal frame. Wear work gloves to keep your hands clean and to help you grip the tool better.

    • 2). Start at one end of the window frame, and place the tool’s blade under the putty. Lift the blade slowly upward to break the sealant from the frame. Cut the raised putty in half with a utility knife. Working slowly keeps the putty from breaking into multiple small pieces.

    • 3). Grind the chisel or putty knife’s blade into the putty to cut the sealant if you can’t move the putty by placing the chisel or putty’s blade under it. Place the chisel or putty knife under the cut portions, and lift the blade slowly upward to break the sealant from the frame. Cut the raised portions with the utility knife.

    • 4). Place a heat gun over any area of putty that stubbornly remains. Place your chisel or putty knife to the right of the heat gun. Lift the putty as you move the heat gun slowly to your left. Cut the raised putty in half once it is free from the window frame.

    • 5). Dispose of the cut pieces in a trash bag or can. Repeat these steps until all of the old putty is removed.

    • 6). Spray a general-purpose cleaner onto a clean, old rag or cloth. Wipe the metal window frame and glass panes with the cleaner-soaked rag or cloth to remove any dirt and debris.
