Man has evolved and changed in the history of fashion from the 19th century. It has been an exotic journey that covers up all the aspects of fashion ranging from the chiffon sarees to the channel dresses. As one steps in the new millennium, fashion is being continuously triggered by the several socio-economic movements. Fashion till the 19th century used to be generally a footnote on the history of art etc but as the century dawned fashion became an exclusive enterprise or rather more precisely it became the pursuit of the man's wealth.

The lower strata of the society usually settled for garments that are hand-made or stitched but with the changing scenario the boutique selling system boomed up as the tailors of the neighbourhood established their network together. With modernization prevailing in now the garments can be ordered from almost any part of the world just by the use of internet. Each decade of the century is moving on with some new advancements. Initially dress code for women was influenced by the similarity of status. During the 20th century demand for ‘silhouette' became prominent. Colors generally preferred were black and grey and the choice of the fabrics were georgettes and silk.

After the independence, fashion pursued by the Indian women was strongly influenced by the British that resulted into the arrival of the western culture and traditions creep in India. Western clothes became a mark of status symbol among the women. Women who lie in the age group of 30's are mostly conservative and so mostly dress in a more feminine manner.
Indian cinema is also one of the greatest factors that paved the way of fashion in the minds of Indian women. With the advent of western clothes the use of peshwas, ghaghras, odhnis reduced considerably among women.

Tight churidars and tight kurtas with high coiffers are also being replaced nowadays by mini-skirts and high boots by women. The influence of TV and international fashion has made such an impact on the minds of women that with the changing trends the mindset of women also changes.

Clothes determine the confidence, poise and nature of a woman. Hence nowadays independent women prefer dressing themselves according to their comfort level and poise. As per the occasion a women can dress herself up in a corporate look, ethnic look or formal look etc. Fashion is hence so flexible that it can be broadly classified into several zones and looks as per the situation demands.
