How do I Shift Gears on a Mesa Runner Schwinn Bike & Instructions?
- 1). Straddle the bike as if you were going to go riding.
- 2). Look down at the gears attached to the pedal sprocket and identify the low- and high-gear sprocket. The larger sprocket uses the lowest gear set and the smaller one uses the higher gear set. Gears are numbered, for example, from 1 to 10 (or up to the highest number of gears) with the first gear being the lowest, or the gear with the least resistance. The gear set is the layer of gears that your chain moves around, and it is attached to the rear wheel hub. Each gear wheel in the set represents a different gear.
- 3). Shift between the low- and high-gear sets by pedaling the bike and pressing the lever on the index shifter on the left handlebar. Pushing the index shifter forward allows the chain to go to the larger gear wheel. Pull the lever back to change to the smaller gear wheel. Observe how the chain will move from one gear to another on the pedal sprocket but remain on the same gear wheel in the rear gear set while this is done.
- 4). Change gears within the gear sets by setting your chain to the low or high gear on the pedal sprocket with the left index shifter. Push the lever on the right index shifter forward to go up a gear; pull it back to lower the gear. The size of the gears in the gear set works in the reverse of the size of the front. In the gear set, the largest gear wheel is the smallest gear available in that set. For example, to ride in first gear, the chain should pass around the smallest gear wheel at the pedal sprocket and the largest gear wheel in the last set.
- 5). Change the gear set accessed from the lower first five gears to the second higher gear set by shifting to the fifth gear and then pushing forward on the left index shifter. Wait for the chain to move, and then quickly pull back on the right index shifter several times until the chain is around the larger gear wheel in the back. Reverse this process to change from the upper gear set to the lower.
