Mama's Family is an American comedy television series that was first performed on NBC on January 22, 1983, but later canceled in May 1984, and then NBC decided to air reruns until September 1985.
Mama's Family was returned to its first run syndication, where it was aired for additional four seasons, and ended on February 24, 1990.
Mama's Family is actually a spin-off of a returning series of comedy sketches called the Family, which has been appeared on the Carol Burnett Show in the 1970s.
The main characters of the series are Thelma Harper played by Vicki Lawrence, Her sister Rue McClanahan in the role of Fran Crowley, Her son Ken Berry playing Vinton Harper, and Vinton's two children, Sonja played by Karin Argoud and Buzz by Eric Brown, and his two wives Mitzi and Naomi Oates.
The show set in the small town of Raytown, rotated around a typical wrangling family, headed by the main character, Thelma Harper.
She is a fictional character, a buxom, blue hair, purse-lipped, 65 years old widow.
She is quite senile, dependent, and behaves more elderly on the family.
The NBC version saw the most easygoing version of Mama, as she was cool, calm, and collected.
By the time syndicated version came out, Mama became loud, crude, with a smart mouth.
Thelma's younger sister Fran is a journalist for a local paper and also a free-lance writer.
Vinton, the youngest of Thelma's three children, always makes a fool out of himself, his wife; Mitzi has left him to become a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Sonja and Buzz are teenager daughter and son of Vinton from Mitzi.
In the first season Vinton met with Naomi, his next-door neighbor, and soon married her.
He sold his house and started a business, but did not get anything, and then they are forced to move into Thelma's basement.
Harvey Korman, director, made characteristic appearances and Eunice's Husband, Ed Higgins.
Eunice and Ellen are the daughters of Thelma.
The character of Ed was written during the eleventh and final season of the Carol Burnett Show.
First season gathered good enough ratings.
The first episode finished among the top 30 programs ranked at 28 for the week, gathering an admirable 18.
