Moen Faucet Sticks When Rotating
- The first thing to check is your faucet handle for signs of damage, wear or improper fit. Remove the handle to inspect it by unscrewing the set screw at the base of the handle with an Allen wrench. If it is a round, single handle, the screw is under a cap or plug. Remove this first and then unscrew the screw with an Allen wrench. Pull the handle off and look at the bottom for signs of wear and tear or damage to the mounting area. Replace the handle with a new one if you see any problems.
- Another problem area is the cartridge. This part controls the water flow into the spout. Each cartridge has a stem that inserts into the handle. The cartridge is designed to rotate, and it turns when you turn the handle. If the cartridge is damaged, or something is blocking the cartridge, the handle will stick. After turning off your water, remove the handle then remove the retaining nut on top of the cartridge. Inspect the cartridge for signs of damage or blockage. Remove the cartridge, replace it with a new one and then reassemble the faucet if you see a problem here.
- The retaining nut that secures the cartridge to the faucet body is another potential reason your handle sticks. This part sits right on top of the cartridge. If this part is too tight or if you installed it incorrectly, your handle will not turn properly. Inspect this part to ensure it matches your faucet threading, is screwed on correctly and that there is nothing lodged underneath the retaining nut. Remove this part and replace it with a new one if you detect an issue.
- The stop tube is the rotational limit stop on the faucet that prevents scalding and limits the amount of rotation your faucet handle has. If your faucet handle sticks, this part may be jammed or partially affecting the rotation of the handle. To fix this, remove the handle and bonnet after shutting off your water. Slide the stop tube kit off. Look for damaged, missing parts or anything that may impede the handle. If it has damage, replace the part with a new one made for your faucet and then reassemble the faucet.
