How to Train a Dog Not to Roam

    • 1). Signal for your dog to lay down and initiate the "stay" protocol. As soon as your dog rests on the ground, simultaneously say "stay" and place your hand, palm down fingers together, in front of your dog's nose. This hand signal is important because it temporarily blocks the animal's vision.

    • 2). Reward your dog for complying. Say "good," and give him a treat. If he does not move say "good," again and offer him another treat. Let him remain in position for a moment before moving on to the next step.

    • 3). Give the release command. You may use any word you like, but remain consistent. Say the release word and then ignore your dog until he gets up from his prone position.

    • 4). Repeat these steps, slowly increasing the duration of the exercise. While making the dog stay for longer periods of time, offer your dog treats at intermittent intervals.

    • 5). Repeat extending the distance between you and your dog. Start right in front of the animal and give the command as you always have but take a step away before offering a treat. Then try two steps and so forth.

    • 6). Add distractions. Try different locations and giving the command when people are about the area.
