Plumbing: How to Install a Drain

    • 1). Determine the point at which the drain will connect to the main waste line. Keep in mind that drains must maintain a downward slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot. Hold a line level in place at the proposed location of the drain line to determine approximate slope.

    • 2). Install tee onto the main waste line. Clean the inside of fittings and outside of pipes prior to gluing. Apply a generous coating of ABS glue to both the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe. Join the pipe and fitting, adjust the fitting's position so that it faces the correct direction. Turn the fitting slightly to distribute glue and firmly hold the pieces together for approximately thirty seconds. Allow joints to cure for approximately ten minutes prior to handling them.

    • 3). Measure the distance from the fitting at the main waste line to the next fitting in the drain line. (Remember to add the portion of pipe that extends inside of the fitting to your final calculation.) Cut the pipe to fit using a chop saw. Clean and deburr cut edges using a lint-free rag.

    • 4). Glue the pipe to fittings on both ends.

    • 5). Dangle the plumb bob beneath the center of the drain's opening. Let the bob swing until it slows to a halt. With the bob and its string as a reference, use a tape measure to determine the position of the p-trap.

    • 6). Glue the p-trap beneath the drain in the same manner as other fittings.

    • 7). Cut, install, and glue the final length of pipe and any ABS adaptor fittings. Allow glue to cure. Run water or perform a pressure test to check for leaks.
