Some Truths About Toothpastes

There is no doubt that maintaining healthy teeth and healthy mouth is very important thing. Each day different Medias "attack" with advertisements of different types of toothpastes - hygiene, whitening, treating and preventing from caries.

Toothpastes, of course, can be expensive and cheap. However, this is not how their quality is distinguished. Dentists in the advertisements sound really convincing. The prices even of the expensive pastes are acceptable, especially when you take into account the possible consequences of the poor dental hygiene, but in fact not the price but the content of a toothpaste determines whether it would work or not. One of the most accented pluses of toothpastes is their ability to remove residues of food. But how? Manufacturers use for this purpose most often calcium carbonate, i. e. chalk which is rude abrasive that scratches the enamel and deletes the coating of the tooth. As a rule, the more expensive toothpaste is, the coarser the chalk is. It is even worse when the paste contains aluminum oxide (in some countries this ingredient has already been banned. If you want to be sure of the harmless effect of your toothpaste, you should see if it contains silica.

The second advertising trick is the toothpaste with antibacterial additives. Above all, this is Triclosan- a chemical that destroys microorganisms in the oral cavity. But along with that it has the ability to harm the useful for the body microflora. Moreover, bacteria are able to adapt quickly to Triclosan. Some manufacturers include in the paste antibacterial agents such as metronidazole and chlorhexidine. Recent studies indicate that they bear as much benefit as injury and specialists now recommend not to be used in the manufacturing of toothpastes.

The third fact, on which producers focus, is the abundant foam that the toothpaste is capable of making. In most toothpastes sodium lauryl sulphate is used for this purpose. A new study of American scientists has shown that this substance in very small quantities can cause serious damages and can even lead to cataract.

An important component of the toothpaste is calcium. According to advertisements, it almost becomes clear that there is no need to eat foods containing calcium; you just need to use such toothpastes with it. But actually calcium carbonate (that is used in the manufacturing of toothpaste) is insoluble, i. e. it cannot contribute to the mineralization of the teeth. This function is performed by fluorine. 90% of all pastes contain fluoride. But in different toothpastes the concentration of fluoride is significantly different.

Before you buy toothpaste you should carefully read what it contains and how it affects the body. This is very important not only for the health of your teeth and mouth but also for the health of your whole body.
