The Key to a Great Kids Bed
The key to a great kid's beds isn't necessarily who makes it, how much you pay for it or what it does. In reality the making of a kid's bed is the mattress. Without a good mattress on your child's bed they are not going to sleep and let's face it that's what we want them to do at bed time. So how do you know that the mattress is right for your child?
This question very much depends on their age and weight, there are a large range of mattresses out there but many are not actually suitable for kids. Essentially mattresses fall in to four categories:
Open coil sprung mattresses
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Memory Foam Mattresses
Combination Mattresses (combining Memory Foam with springs)
Sprung mattresses come with different pressure gauges on the springs which dictate how soft or hard the mattress will feel. With young children the softer the mattress is the more comfortable it will be and the better support it will offer. Pocket sprung mattresses are designed to distribute weight more evenly so if your child weighs very little (which smaller children do) they are not going to gain the correct support from a Pocket Sprung Mattress. As a rule with sprung mattresses you should be thinking in terms of open coil springs for younger kids and pocket sprung for the older ones. It is worth noting that if you do go down the sprung route for a younger child you are going to need to think about changing the mattress when they get to 10 or 11 years of age.
Memory foam mattresses in contrast to sprung mattresses are good for all ages of kids. Because memory foam reacts to the weight and height of the body and also reacts to minimal weight stimulation they offer superior support to kids of all ages. It is however important not to go with too much memory foam on a kids mattress. Research has suggested that around two and a half centimeters is good for kids up to 15 or so. In theory this means that if you buy a good kids memory foam mattress when they are 4 years old you should not have to change it. Memory foam does not wear out particularly when only dealing with a child's weight. They also have the advantage of being fully hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant and many come with removable washable covers.
So if you want your kids to get a good night's sleep think carefully about your choice of mattress. If you would like more information about kids beds or kids mattresses feel free to give me a call on 01252 727412 or visit our website Rainbow Wood South.
