How to Use Anchor Bolts in Concrete

104 10
    • 1). Read the installation instructions packaged with your anchor bolts to determine the correct-size masonry drill bit needed to drill the hole and the depth you need to drill the hole.

    • 2). Insert the masonry drill bit into the hammer drill, set the depth gauge to the dimension specified in the anchor bolt installation instructions, and put on your safety glasses.

    • 3). Drill the hole into the concrete. Stop drilling when the depth gauge contacts the concrete's surface.

    • 4). Remove debris from the hole by inserting the round wire brush into the hole, rotating the brush handle and pulling the wire brush out of the concrete.

    • 5). Insert the nozzle of the air bulb into the hole in the concrete and push the nozzle to the bottom of the hole.

    • 6). Squeeze the air bulb to clear the hole of concrete dust. Stop forcing air into the hole when there is no more dust emitting from the hole.

    • 7). Place a flat washer over the threaded end of the anchor bolt and then thread a hex nut onto the anchor bolt threads until the top of the hex nut rests flush with the top of the anchor bolt.

    • 8). Slide the anchor bolt into the hole you drilled in the concrete, with the threaded end of the anchor bolt facing toward you.

    • 9). Hit the nut with a hammer to force the anchor bolt to the bottom of the hole.

Place the appropriate socket onto the click-style torque wrench and set the torque on the wrench as specified in the anchor bolt installation instructions.

    • 11

Tighten the nut on the anchor bolt with the torque wrench until you hear a click from the wrench. Do not over-torque the nut, as this will compromise the holding strength of the anchor bolt.

Remove the nut and washer from the anchor bolt and the anchor bolt is ready to use.
