How to Lock Fine Hair

104 9

    Starting the Locking Process

    • 1). Grow out your hair. Fine hair should be at least three inches long before you attempt to dreadlock it. This gives you enough length to grasp onto and work with.

    • 2). Don't wash your hair for three days before you dreadlock. If you must wash your hair, use a bar soap to cleanse your hair instead of regular shampoo. Don't use any conditioner or moisturizing agents on your hair, ideally for two to six weeks before dreadlocking. The dryer your hair is, the coarser it will be. The coarser your hair is, the easier it will be to dreadlock.

    • 3). Start from the back and separate the hair into even sections. Separate your hair into one-quarter-inch sections for best results. With fine hair, dreadlocks must be thicker to ensure full locking. Thicker locks are also much easier to maintain than thinner ones.

    • 4). Braid each of the sections that you have made in your hair. Leave the braids in for at least a day or two. Braiding the hair will make it coarser, causing it to take much more easily when it comes time to dreadlock your hair.

    • 5). Take out the braids you have made one by one and comb the hair against the cuticle, toward the scalp. Hold the strands of hair from the bottom and comb upwards.

    • 6). Coat your hands in beeswax and roll the strands in between your hair until you have formed a lock. Use as much wax as you need to ensure locking up the entire length of the hair.
