Sciatica Spasms - How Does Stress Play Into It?

103 241
Sciatica spasms are extremely painful.
The muscles along the sciatic nerve could spasm when the nerve gets irritated for several possible reasons, for example a herniated disk in the lumbar spine, Piriformis syndrome and other underlying causes.
On the other hand it could also be muscle spasms from for example a strained muscle that in turn irritates the sciatic nerve.
It's a vicious cycle and when you bring stress into the arena it will get real interesting.
Stress and back pain, in this case sciatica pain, are strongly related.
Stress hormones can heighten the perception of pain and also cause the muscles to tense up.
In fact muscles can tense up to the point of going into painful spasms.
Stress causes muscle tension.
Muscle tension then decreases blood flow in the tissues, which results in less oxygen and nutrients going into the muscles and less acidic waste (a byproduct of muscle activity) going out of the muscles.
Reduced circulation also delays the healing process.
Increased Muscle tension brings on more pain and increased pain causes the muscles to tighten even more.
Round and round you go, feeling ever more miserable.
If you already have pre-existing back problems, stress will be a quick-trigger for pain.
A relatively small amount of tension or a wrong movement can bring on a painful flare up of your condition.
When your muscles tense up because of stress it leaves them increasingly vulnerable to injury.
So what can you do to de-stress, to give your muscles a chance to relax and to take the pressure of the nerve? You will have to take some active steps to reduce stress in your life.
When you lower the stress, pain that is caused by tensed muscles will also reduce.
Exercises help to reduce stress.
Stretching exercises increase circulation, which then speed up the healing process and also reduce the tightness in the muscles.
Aerobic exercises help burn off the stress hormones and also increase endorphin production, which will naturally lower the pain and get you into a better mood.
Choose low impact aerobic exercises such as swimming or bicycling.
Deep breathing exercises are also a good way to release stress and relax.
You will also have to have a look at your life style and make a few decisions if this or that activity could be saved for some other time.
Nowadays we tend to stuff every moment of our day to the limit to take advantage of our time.
After a while, when it all gets to be too much, we start to have stress symptoms and then physical symptoms.
In the end we aren't even enjoying the many activities anymore, but spending our time, efforts and money on getting better from the ailments the stress (caused by over-activity) brought on.
Make some choices and reduce.
It is actually not a bad thing to have a few hours in the evening without a plan.
