Physical & Behavior Development of a Puppy at Week Two
- A puppy's eyes should open between one to two weeks of age. He will begin to respond to light and movement after his eyes open, and he will begin to explore the world around him. He will begin recognizing his mother, litter mates and any toys or items placed around him.
- A puppy's ears will open and he will begin hearing sounds. This typically happens between day 13 and 17. He may also begin to recognize voices around him.
- Within the first seven to 10 days of life, a puppy should double her birth weight. She should be weighed daily for the first two weeks and then weekly, using a food scale.
- A puppy will also begin to whimper when he is uncomfortable, hungry, or cold. He may begin trying to walk during this stage, preparing him for the third week which includes the puppy standing to walk, playing, lapping liquids and the growth of teeth.
