How to Correctly Use Hot Rollers
- 1). Choose the correct hot roller finish for your desired style. Hot rollers come with two main options, ribbed and flocked, to suit your hair texture and styling needs. Traditional hot rollers are ribbed, which "more people prefer because they slip out of the hair easier when it's time to remove them," says Jane Roberts, corporate communications director for Sally Beauty. Flocked rollers have a raised coating which helps hold the roller in place and are good for creating large, loose curls.
- 2). Starting with clean, dry hair, separate your hair into 3 or 4 sections. This makes it easier to roll your own hair without it getting in your way. Part your hair from ear to ear and from the middle of your forehead to the nape of your neck. Twist the sections you are not working on and clip in place.
- 3). Allow the rollers to heat up completely before using. Rolling your hair on lukewarm or cold rollers will not allow your hair to curl properly.
- 4). Roll the hair carefully. Place the roller under the ends of a 1 inch section, roll the hair up to the root and secure. Repeat all over the head until all the hair is rolled.
- 5). Allow enough time for the rollers to curl and set the hair. According to CareFair.com, hot rollers need at least 10 to 20 minutes to cool completely and set the hair. If you try to remove the rollers while still warm, it affects the longevity of your curls. To save time, roll your hair first then, while the rollers cool, apply makeup, make breakfast, get dressed, or perform any other activity you need to do.
- 6). Remove the rollers. Take off the clips and slowly unwind the rollers to the end. Try not to disturb the curls until all rollers are removed.
- 7). Style your hair. For a loose, tousled look, bend over and shake the curls out with your head upside down. For an elegant updo, Symonds suggests pinning up the curled hair into a loose bun at the crown or at the nape of the neck, allowing a few tendrils to fall naturally and frame the face.
