How to Sand a Cast Iron Tub
- 1). Wipe the tub clean with a damp cloth. Scrub over the surface and remove dirt and debris on the surface of the tub. Push down firmly on the tub in a circular motion.
- 2). Cover all drains and other holes in the bathroom with masking tape. This will protect them when the sandblasting is taking place. Lay a tarp down to cover the entire bathroom floor.
- 3). Set up your sandblaster next to the tub and close the lower sand valve at the bottom of the blaster. Fill up the sandblaster with 40 pounds of silica sand. Plug in an air compressor and attach the air compressor to the sandblaster.
- 4). Open the valve on the nozzle and leave it all the way open. Close the sand air valve at the top of the sandblaster. Open the main air valve and let the tank begin to charge up to pressure. Open the sand air valve to the 7 o'clock position and point the nozzle toward the tub.
- 5). Continue to open the sand valve until the sand begins coming out. Move from side to side and blast the entire cast iron tub with the sand. Continue until the paint and rust on the tub has been completely stripped. Shut off all of the valves and reverse the process to turn off the sandblaster.
- 6). Clean up the area and inspect the tub. Sand down with fine-grade sandpaper any small areas that still have paint or rust.
