Somebody Needs to Focus the Broadband Issue in India
I was recently reading an article on a news portal that the father of internet - Mr. Vint Cerf€ has said that internet penetration rate is quite low in our country besides the broadband usage is also not so overwhelming.
Today India stands at 3rd largest consumer of internet after China and USA but the problem is that only 10% of our population is online. There are several reasons for this decline but one of the important things is the lack of infrastructure and the access of latest technology to the end user.
First of all the ISPs do offer broad band service mainly in metropolitan cities and even in those cities the commercial areas enjoy high broad band net. The same is the not the case with tier-2 or 3 cities where the users are still using the dialup connection as a result they become reluctant to use net.
Government and private enterprises are both working to get the latest technology implemented in the broadband industry but they have a long way to go. The wired net is not reliable as the cable is disrupted on regular basis whether its underground or in the air. Wireless access like 3G is not yet started properly and due to its high cost we cannot ascertain its future. Middle class people cannot afford 3G so easily.
Some people say that smart phones are going to be next broadband hub but again they need to have high speed internet connections so the user can engage otherwise it will be a big failure.
India needs revolutionary steps to be implemented for its broadband usage otherwise the integral part of population will remain in the dark ages. Its been found that the those countries where the internet penetration is quite high has a huge development index. This is indeed obvious because net simplifies trading. For eg. A bank can handle only a handful of cheques on a daily basis while online fund transfer make it quite easy as millions of transactions can occur on daily basis and again without any error.
Whether it's paying your bills or getting a good education or connecting with your friends on social media platform, internet is the only way to do so. Hence if we need to get our country to its next level and make our civilization more advanced then the internet problem has to be addressed seriously and the access to the same should be available to common man at reasonable prices.
