Addiction Treatment: Florida Model vs. Residential Inpatient Program

101 13
A true residential inpatient program, also referred to as an inpatient substance abuse program, is the most powerful and intensive type of addiction treatment available. This type of program is often confused with a "Florida Model" drug rehab center, which is actually very different. Unfortunately some Florida drug rehab centers attempt to sell their "Florida Model" addiction treatment center as a residential inpatient program. If you or someone you care about needs help for addiction or alcoholism, understanding the differences between these two types of treatment could be the critical difference between getting the right help needed and risking repeated relapses.

The Florida Model: The Florida model drug rehab center isn't a residential inpatient program in any way. In fact, Florida model centers don't have on-site living at all. This type of program provides therapy and other programs for addicts and alcoholics during certain hours of the day, and then sends these people to off-site housing in the evening. This can be beneficial to those who require less supervision but still need to be treated during the day. However, this also means that there are more environmental threats to a newly recovering person's sobriety and more opportunities to use drugs or alcohol because of the lack of supervision.

A drug treatment center that offers a true residential inpatient program is rare. This is because these programs are extremely intense and allow patients to take full responsibility for their own recovery while in an environment that is supervised 100% of the time. Residential inpatient programs are so named because clients who participate live in the same place that they receive treatment. For example, one of the most successful and comprehensive drug rehab centers in Florida - in fact one of the most successful in the country - offers an incredible 66+ hours per week of intensive therapies for its clients. A client's time is divided between these therapies and periods of rest, reflection and recreation.

For many people suffering from drug addiction or alcoholism, the structure and supervision of a true residential inpatient program is required in order to take their recovery seriously. The lack of accountability and supervision can lead many addicts to relapse in an effort to obtain relief from the inevitable PAWS symptoms that will likely continue long after a person has left a Florida model drug rehab center. If you are serious about getting clean and being empowered with the tools to stay that way for the rest of your life, then it's likely that only a real, properly licensed residential inpatient program is right for you.
