Puppies - Why You Need To Be Patient With Potty Training
At the age of seven weeks puppies have virtually no control over their sphincter muscles so they can not control them.
This means that your puppy can not delay doing his business as soon as he feels the urge to do so.
At this stage all you can do is put down some paper for him to use if he is already paper trained.
Your pup will then use the paper to do what needs to be done.
As he gets older his nervous and muscular system develops and he starts to gain some control over his sphincter muscles.
This is a very gradual process which takes time.
Most puppy owners find that their pups will soon be able to do their "big business" outside but still do their pee inside the house.
The reason for this is that pups need to pee more often and a good rule of thumb is to expect this to happen: 1.
every two hours 2.
immediately after a meal 3.
during and right after play 4.
every time the puppy wakes up after sleeping Those are the times you need to take her out right away.
Remember: your baby has very little control over her bladder constrictor so she will be unable to wait until you have finished that telephone conversation or meal.

- Full control over sphincter muscles can be expected at five to six month of age, but sometimes you will find that as your pup gets very excited or needs to show submission there will still be some pee occasionally.
- Still a young dog needs to go "to the bathroom" more often than an older dog so you need to take him out more frequently to enable him to relieve himself.
- If you do not take him out at least every three hours he may become very unhappy and your carpet eventually wet.
